Try New Technology

My first unRAID (6 drive max)

by on Feb.19, 2011, under Techie

I’ve known about the unRAID software for a few years now, but finally decided it was time to get away from my PC connected RAID Cage and go network storage so I built an unRAID with some advise on parts from a friend. Currently I can only install 6 drives w/o having to install a SATA add-on card, but even with an add-on card you’d only get 7 drives in this case. Below are the parts I used to build it and I’ll tell you what it’s nice an quite.

Case: LIAN LI PC-Q08B Black Aluminum Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case
Power Supply: Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650W 80 PLUS Power Supply
Hard Drives: 4x 750Gb Seagate 7200.11 and a 500Gb Seagate 7200.11 (what I had laying around)
Motherboard: ZOTAC H55ITX-A-E LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
CPU: Intel Core i3-540 Clarkdale 3.06GHz LGA 1156 73W Processor BX80616I3540
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 Model F3-10666CL8D-4GBRM
USB Key (for unRAID): Patriot Xporter XT Boost 8GB Flash Drive Model PEF8GUSB

Hope this helps others wanting to get an affordable and easily upgradeable network storage device setup! My eventual goal is to switch all 5 hard drives out for 2TB 5900RPM drives to help save energy and give me 10TB-ish of usable space. Please note that this is a very tight fit, but it does all fit and work quite well. I installed my hard drives so the SATA and Power cables plug in from the power supply side so I can easily replace one if I need w/o having to fight cables or drop the motherboard side of the case off. I’ll update with some pictures sometime once I have the correct power supply installed.
